December 21st 2008 07:40
Lumbago is nothing but pain in the lower back which is characterized by a sudden onset of severe pain, restricted mobility and the sensation of the back being stuck in one position. The pain usually occurs after forward flexion movement like cleaning teeth, sneezing, coughing or bending or lifting weight. Acute Lumbado may be regarded as an acute form of mechanical derangement and locking of the invertebral joint complex. The management of lumbago requires a detailed history of pain, overall assessment of of physical disability and loss of function. The pain is managed by analgesics, rest and physical therapeutic measures like heat, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator (TENS), ultrasound and back education programmes.
